To have each intern leave with increased skills and a portfolio of work.
Components of the Internship experience:
In the Washington office:
• Legislative Research and Policy Development
-- Interns will develop legislative research skills through assigned projects on issues related to pending legislation. Utilizing materials from the Library of Congress, the Congressional Research Service, the Congressional Record, the Internet, lobbying organizations, and a variety of other sources, the interns will prepare briefing books or memorandum summaries providing the research results and recommendations to the Congressman and his staff. • Constituent Relations -- Interns will develop constituent relations skills through hands-on assignments involving drafting correspondence on issues and legislation about which constituents are concerned, receiving and summarizing constituent communications by telephone and in person, and researching and developing materials for distribution via constituent newsletters.
In the District office:
• Casework Research -- Interns will develop casework research skills through assigned cases related to constituent problems with Federal agencies. They will increase their knowledge of the workings of a variety of Federal agencies through working with them to resolve constituent problems.
• Constituent Relations -- Interns will develop constituent relations skills through hands-on assignments involving drafting correspondence on issues and legislation about which constituents are concerned, and through receiving, clarifying, and summarizing constituent communications by telephone and in person.
• Shadow the Congressman or Key Staff Personnel -- Interns will have the opportunity to shadow the Congressman or key staff personnel to better understand the daily schedule and duties of a member of the House of Representatives and the responsibilities of his staff.
Responsibilities of Washington and District Office Interns:
In addition to the components of the internship mentioned previously, interns will become proficient in the general procedures for operating a Congressional office. As opportunities become available, interns will be provided practical, hands-on assignments to reinforce the many educational experiences afforded. Interns will be supervised by a designated individual.
Interns must also keep current on district, national and international news. Interns should read national Washington newspapers and local Cleveland newspapers daily.
Interns must also have a working knowledge of government, particularly the legislative process and Ohio government. The House of Representatives’ Home Page and Congressional Quarterly are good sources of information. Also, government texts provide a good base of knowledge as well.
